Strong start Fred Rutten at Schalke 04
- Jol draws at Bayern
Saturday 16 August 2008
Dutch coach Fred Rutten has made
a good start into the new Bundesliga season.
Without the two players he brought
with him from the Eredivisie - Orlando Engelaar and
Jefferson Farfan - his team Schalke 04 beat Hannover
96 3-0, with two goals of Kevin Kuranyi.
Arnold Bruggink played the entire
game for Hannover.
Schalke's big summer signings Engelaar
and Farfan were both out with injuries, but that didn't
keep Rutten's team from having a magnificent start with
two goals - both from corners - in the first 7 minutes
of the game.
Martin Jol, the other Dutch Bundesliga
coach, also had a decent start into the new season with
his Hamburger SV.
His new team were 2-0 down after
only fifteen minutes, but fought back to gain a 2-2
draw; a result Jol could live with.
"When you go 2-0 down at Bayern
it's normally over and out. But we showed a lot of character.
We played well and with a lot of heart," Jol said.
The big surprise in the Bundesliga
were newly promoted 1899 Hoffenheim.
They gained a 3-0 victory away
to Energie Cottbus.
Hoffenheim are the toy of multi-millionaire
Dietmar Hopp, who's money took the team from a tiny
village of only 3,300 from the amateur leagues to the
highest German level.
