Martin Jol: "There is still room
for improvement"
Monday 15 December 2008
Satisfaction was written all over
his face as Martin Jol has maintained HSV in the top
of the Bundesliga.
After the game against Frankfurt,
last Saturday it was time make up the balance.
"I am reasonably satisfied
with the fact that we have 33 points. We are still in
Europe and in the Cup. Surely there is room for improvement.
But in the past six months a lot has been improved as
well. We are fourth in the league. And we could have
been a bit higher up. The 2-1 loss at the hands of Berlin
is still bothering me. We could have won that and had
we done so we would have been all the way up there now."
Halfway through the season Hamburg
are joint third in the Bundesliga, two points joint
leaders Munich and Hoffenheim, an with 33 points this
side is the second best in Hamburg's history since the
establishment of the three-point-system.
But the big man knows there is
room for improvement and as such still a way higher
up.
"I think we are still depending
on our strikers too much. At Stuttgart Khedira scored
two goals, and he is midfielder. So that is where our
room for improvement is. Piotr Trochowski could be a
goal scoring midfielder for us. Against Frankfurt he
played the way I like to see it. In the first half he
shot on goal three times. When he does that every game
he could be a real number 10."
"But of course we have a prolific
striker with Mladen Petric. When he gets a chance it's
usually a goal. That is really good for the confidence
of the team. Before the game on Saturday I asked him
'Are you an all-round player'. He said no. Then I told
him: 'Yes you are', because you have learned to be a
team player."
Despite all the room for improvement
in the current squad Jol knows reinforcements are needed.
But he also knows that money is
tight at Hamburg.
"But I am also an optimist.
Our public deserves a good team, but we should be smart
and perhaps try something with younger players."
Knowing BMJ he probably already
has some in mind...
