HSV Hamburg defender Joris Mathijsen played an important role in his club's 2-0 victory over Vfb. Stuttgart, the German champions of 2007.

He scored the second goal and secured the victory for his team that kept Hamburg in the top of the Bundesliga, where they are now third, two points behind surprising leaders Hoffenheim.

"This feels so good," Mathijsen said.

"Especially because we played so well as a team, with the right mentality. We knew Stuttgart have a strong team end especially after the break we kept them in their half."

With the convincing victory over Stuttgart Martin Jol's team washed away the bad taste of the 3-0 defeat on Sunday against 1899 Hoffenheim

"It was good that we had the chance to set things straight three days after that defeat," Mathijsen said.
