"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Hamburg gain fortunate win over Bremen

Monday 24 November 2008

Martin Jol and Hamburg did some good business in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

The North-German side had some poor results recently and defeat against Bremen would have meant Jol's team would have lost contact with the top of the table.

Thanks to José Paolo Guerrero Hamburg started the game well when the Peruvian hit the net only six minutes into the game, but Bremen then took the initiative and equalized on the half hour.

Diego curled in a free kick from the edge of the box and Frank Rost showed weak hands when he deflected the effort into the net.

The game was a balanced affair after that with Bremen looking the more dangerous team.

The decisive goal came 15 minutes from the end when the always busy Ivica Olic cut inside from the right and blasted a long shot into the top left corner: 2-1.

Diego had the best chance to make it all square five minutes later but unaware that he was unmarked and had all the time in the world he squandered his big chance for a second goal.

Hamburg are fifth after the victory, five points behind leaders 1899 Hoffenheim.

Martin Jol's team are facing Ajax in the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

Martin Rutten, coach of Schalke 04 had been put under pressure last week by the chairman of the Board of Directors, who demanded at least 10 points from the last four games before the winter break.

Against lowly Borussia Mönchengladbach Schalke produced what his highness demanded: a win.

Goals by Halil Altintop (2) and Farfan for Schalke and Friend for Gladbach put the 3-1 end result on the score board before half-time.

Patrick Paauwe played the full 90 minutes for Gladbach while Orlando Engelaar was substituted in the 69th minute.

The victory now sees Schalke in 7th place with 23 points, eight points behind Hoffenheim.

Arnold Bruggink and his team Hannover 96 had a bad day at Eintracht Frankfurt losing 4-0.

The defeat has reduced the gap with the relegation places to only three points for Hannover.

Bruggink - only just recovered from injury - was replaced in the 73rd minute.
