"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Red for Engelaar and Mulder

Sunday 14 December 2008

Both midfielder Orlando Engelaar and assistant-coach Youri Mulder among others were sent off during today's game of Schalke 04 at league leaders Hoffenheim in a game that ended with 11 against 9: 1-1.

Hoffenheim were fighting to be crowned Winter Champions f the Bundesliga and for that they needed at least a point against Schalke.

The team from Gelsenkirchen had other goals as they just wanted a result against a team that has been almost unbeatable at home.

The team of Fred Rutten took the lead just before the break but saw things go terribly wrong after the break.

On the hour Jermaine Jones got his second yellow card for a serious tackle from behind, but as Jones had all the right to argue he played the ball he was given his marching orders.

In the turmoil Mulder and Rutten's second assistant Mike Bueskens were sent to the stands for insulting the referee and Orlando Engelaar saw his first yellow card for protesting.

After Teber had equalized for Hoffenheim from a magnificent free kick Engelaar made trouble for his team even greater by tugging the shirt of that same Teber.

He also got his second yellow (and his second red of the season) which meant Schalke were down to nine.

But the 9 in white held out against the 11 in blue and so Hoffenheim now take only a 1 point lead on the table as the Bndesliga goes on a two months winter break.
