Gentenaar: "Van Basten's decision
was very unprofessional"
Wednesday 17 September 2008
Dennis Gentenaar is very unhappy
about the decision of his coach Marco van Basten to
take Kenneth Vermeer as second keeper to Ajax's UEFA
Cup game against FK Borac in Serbia.
The sudden promotion of a competitor
stings the former NEC stopper.
"He told me Vermeer is is
close to me, but not yet at my level. So I am still
considered the better keeper. When I asked him why I
am no longer number 2 he literally said that otherwise
Vermeer would be walking around with a long face. I
think that is very unprofessional," Gentenaar told
Dutch daily Het Parool.
"That is not a top sport climate.
Aren't you supposed to choose the best players? Now
he takes Vermeer's feelings into consideration, so he
is not interested in how I feel about this," said
the keeper who's contract runs out at the end of this
season.
"Sure I was interested in
prolonging my stay at Ajax. But for me it's clear now:
I must see further. That seems only logical. I will
not even rule out a move during the winter break."
