Afonso Alves doesn't owe AZ Alkmaar a
dime
Wednesday 23 July 2008
Middlesbrough-striker Afonso Alves
has won an Arbitration case that Dutch Eredivisie-club
AZ Alkmaar
had initiated.
The Brazilian topscorer thus doesn't
owe AZ a dime of the claimed €7.5 million damages.
According to AZ Alves signed a
contract with them last winter and was to be transferred
from Heerenveen.
The judges ruled that the contract
was invalid because it was only signed by the player.
The club should have known that
the rules state that Alves' manager Wagner Ribeiro should
- as an official FIFA-agent - also have signed the contract,
which he hadn't.
Alves swapped Heerenveen for Middlesbrough
during the midseason transfer window.
AZ felt framed and asked for arbitration.
