Nothing's lost for McClaren's Twente
Friday, 19 September 2008
FC Twente lost the first leg of
their UEFA Cup first round against Stade Rennes, but
they did manage to score an all important away goal
to keep their hopes for the group stage alive: 2-1.
Twente took the lead after 15 minutes
when Romano Denneboom headed home a Eljero Elia cross.
But like they did in their first
two league games Twente were unable to hold on to their
lead.
Stephane Mbia equalized before
half time from a corner and shortly after the break
the French hosts took the lead through Carlos Bocanegra
- also from a set piece.
Former England manager Steve McClaren
wasn't unhappy about the result.
"Except for a short stretch
of the match we played well. I think we have a good
chance to go through."
"We knew Rennes had a lot
of height in the team and that they can be dangerous
because of it," McClaren referred to the two set
pieces that cost his team.
"In spite of knowing their
strength they took us by surprise. That's a shame."
But McClaren thinks his side have
a good chance of progressing: "We played the way
our home crowd is used to: offensive. When we can do
that again in two weeks time we have a good chance."
Goal scorer Romano Denneboom was
disappointed: "We had it all under control, so
it's a petty to give it away like this. After our good
start I felt we could have gotten more out of it."
