Dortmund spoil Feyenoord-party
Saturday 02 August 2008
Borussia Dortmund spoiled Feyenoord's
centennial party yesterday by beating a much weakened
homeside 1-2.
The Germans though should have
scored many more than just the two.
As part of the celebrations around
Feyenoord's 100 years anniversary the Dutch club organised
a tournament with the three clubs they have ever played
a European final against: Celtic, Tottenham Hotspurs
and Borussia Dortmund.
Sadly Feyenoord have been a struggling
club since their last European succes (2002) and even
though they seem to be on the way up again Feyenoord's
fans seemed only mildly interested in the club's jubilee.
When Tottenham and Celtic walked
onto the pitch for their opening match only some 20,000
people manned the stands to be joined by another 10,000
when the main attraction kicked of.
Feyenoord's coach Gert-Jan Verbeek
had to do without many of his strongest players.
Roy Makaay and Jonathan De Guzman
are away with the Dutch Olypic squad and Jon-Dahl Tomasson,
Kevin Hofland, Karim El Ahmadi, Andwele Slory, Theo
Lucius and the recovering Ron Vlaar, the latter sitting
on the bench though.
Much came down on the shoulders
of the older part of the squad: Giovanni van Bronckhorst,
Danny Landzaat and Michael Mols.
Especially the defense around Serginho
Greene suffered during the opening stages, but it till
was a blow when the Germans scored by Polish forward
Blaszczykowksi in the sixth minute.
Inspired by the young talents Georginio
Wijnaldum and Diego Biseswar Feyenoord took the initiative
and managed to equalise shortly before the break.
After the break Feyenoord tried
to create more, but the German defense stood firm, while
their offensive team mates wasted a handful of chances.
In the 78th minute Hille converted
a good Sahin-pass to give the Borussen a chance
to win the tournament when they face Tottenham in the
final on Sunday.
The former team of Martin Jol beat
Scottisch Celtic 2-0.
The English victory was fully deserved.
