Referee Dick Jol ends career over KNVB-row
Monday 14 July 2008
Referee Dick Jol has put an end
to his professional career as a referee today.
That was the outcome of a meeting
Jol had with members of the Dutch FA (KNVB).
Jol and the KNVB have differing
views over the referee's future in football.
The row between the referee and
the KNVB started when Jaap Stam asked Jol to be the
referee in his farewell-match on 26 July.
Jol agreed to referee the game
between Ajax and a selection of players Stam played
with during his career, but the KNVB then appointed
referee Roelof Luinge to the game for no apparent reasons.
Jol and the KNVB have now agreed
that Stam's farewell-game is the last he will lead.
Just why his career ends so suddenly
is unknown.
The referee has been in trouble
with the Dutch FA before.
In 1996 he was suspended as he
allegedly gambled on matches he was in charge of.
A court of law later lifted the
suspension and Jol was rehabilitated.
Jol, who had a short and unimpressive
professional football career, is also coach of a Dutch
amateur side.
