"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

UEFA Cup draw - Results for the five Dutch teams

Tuesday 07 October 2008

In Lyon the draw for the group stages of the UEFA Cup has been performed.

Of course it was obvious that with five Dutch teams in the draw and the rule that states no two teams from the same country can be in the same group one or two of the Dutch sides might end up in a tough group.

And so it was: Heerenveen are in a group with AC Milan, Portsmouth and Wolfsburg and Steve McClaren's FC Twente will have to fight it out with Schalke O4 (!), Paris SG and Manchester City.

The groups of Ajax, Feyenoord and NEC seem to offer the best chances to claim at least a third spot and move on to the round of the last 32.

For Feyenoord UEFA had a renewed encounter in store with Nancy.

Two years ago Feyenoord fans misbehaved in Nancy and as a consequence Feyenoord were evicted from the tournament.

The draw also means an encounter with two Dutch coaches working abroad: Ajax will meet Hamburg where Martin Jol is at the healm and FC Twente were paired to Schalke 04 where their former coach Fred Rutten is the boss.

Germany and Holland are the only two countries who saw all five teams get through the first round.
