"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Stevens does not reveal tactics

Wednesday 26 November 2008

Coach Huub Stevens did not want to reveal on Tuesday what his tactics will be when PSV face Atletico in Madrid on Wednesday.

"Let's all wait and see," he said to the waiting press.

Against Heracles Almelo PSV were successful with two forwards (Danko Lazovic, Danny Koevermans) as the champions won 4-0.

Stevens has a different view of their tactics: "On Saturday we played with four forward thinking players as I also count Dzsudzsak and Ibrahim Afellay as forwards. We'll see how we do things against Atletico. This is of course a totally different game."

Stevens will miss three players in Madrid: Dirk Marcellis, Jan Kromkamp and Nordin Amrabat.

But especially the recovery of Marcellis is going well and he might be part of PSV's squad for Saturday's game against Heerenveen.

PSV are hoping to take the third spot in Group D, but they will have to gain one point more than Ol. Marseilles in the last two remaining group games.

PSV and Marseilles are equal in points, but the French hold the advantage from their head-to-head encounters.

In the first game against Madrid PSV lost 0-3 without chance.

"But even then I saw some positive things," Stevens said.

"Let's build on that."
