"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

No more European football for PSV

Tuesday 21 October 2008

PSV can start focussing on the Eredivisie alone from today onwards as their 1-3 defeat at the hands of Liverpool mean they have been eliminated from all European tournaments.

The team of Huub Stevens finished fourth in Group D after five defeats and won victory.

Olympique Marseilles, who drew 0-0 at home against Atletico Madrid will continue in the UEFA Cup.

Before the game the target was clear: get a better result against Liverpool than Marseilles get against Atletico to gain a ticket for the third round of the UEFA Cup.

But in the end the result of the match in the south of France was unimportant as PSV did not manage to get anything against the second choice of the English league leaders.

Things seemed to head in the right direction when Lazovic gave PSV the lead in the 37th minute, but before the break Liverpool leveled via Ryan Babel after a defensive mishap of Otman Bakkal.

Babel's goal appeared a serious blow for PSV as their good intentions resulted in very little after the break.

Marcellis hit the post and Bakkal saw a shot blocked by Diego Cavalieri.

In the 69th PSV's elimination started to take shape when Albert Riera lashed a shot passed PSV-keeper Andreas Isaksson: 1-2.

Less then ten minutes later all was decided when David N'Gog finished a fast counter attack: 1-3.
