PSV snap last chance
Wednesday 22 October 2008
Two great headers by Danny Koevermans
gave PSV a much deserved 2-0 victory over Olympique
Marseilles in Group D of the Champions League on Wednesday.
In the other game Liverpool were
held at 1-1 in Madrid by Atlético, which means
PSV are now third in the group, 4 points behind joint
leaders Liverpool and Atlético.
PSV had the best chances in the
first half.
First Wuytens and then Bakkal missed
open chances for the home team.
Towards the end of the first half
the French visitors took the initiative, but didn't
create anything.
From the start of the second half
PSV showed what coach Huub Stevens had been saying during
the break.
The hosts came out energetic and
broke through down the right flank time and again.
It resulted in two more massive
chances, but first a very unfortunate Ibrahim Afellay
and then Wuytens missed unchallenged in front of an
open goal.
Koevermans also went close with
a powerful header.
Shortly after 'Koef' (Koof)
did manage to open the score.
First he headed home from a Wuytens
corner and shortly before the end he repeated his achievement
on a great Mendez cross.
The not at all undisputed center
forward was mostly relieved after the victory.
"This feels great; relieve,
joy, happiness," were his first words.
"We're still in the race,"
he continued.
"This game in itself means
very little, but if we can get something in Marseilles
we'll be in the UEFA Cup at least."
