PSV without chance at Olympique Marseilles
Tuesday 04 November 2008
PSV lost 3-0 in Marseilles on Tuesday
in their fourth match of the Champions League first
round.
The result sees PSV now in fourth
spot in their group meaning they could be without European
football after the winter break.
After preparations full of incidents
PSV took on Marseilles on a pitch badly damaged by heavy
rains during the day.
PSV started reasonably well and
had some half chances in the first thirty minutes, the
best one being for Danny Koevermans.
However it was that same Koevermans
who caused the first Marseilles goal.
His poor pass on the Marseilles
half set about a quick Marseilles counter attack that
was finished by Bakary Koné, who outpaced center
back Erik Addo.
Shortly after Otman Bakkal had
a good chance to equalize but his header hit the post.
In the second half PSV were totally
outplayed by the home team and Mamadou Niang scored
two to make it 3-0.
PSV were unable to come up with
a reply in the remaining minutes and with the result
of 2-0 in Eindhoven PSV could well be out after the
two remaining encounters with Liverpool (home) and Atletico
Madrid (away).
