More freedom for Eredivisie coaches
Tuesday 04 August 2009
The coaches in Holland's professional leagues will
have more freedom to coach their teams this season.
As a new rule they may coach throughout the entire
game as long as they stay inside their own coaching
area in front of the bench.
"In the past coaches were allowed to come to the
touch line briefly, but they had to sit down quickly,"
said Cees Bakker of the referee committee of the Dutch
FA (KNVB).
"Starting this season a coach may remain in the
coaching area as long as he wishes, but only to coach
their team. The moment he criticizes the referee or
an opponent he will have to sit down on his bench or
even in the stands."
Bakker emphasized that coaches who enter the pitch
will be sent to the stands.
"Only when a coach enters the pitch in an effort
to calm down a player when he loses his temper can there
be an exception."

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
