Groningen only need one half against Sparta
Saturday 25 October 2008
FC Groningen have shrugged off
the clumsy defeat in Amsterdam of last week in a much
impressive way against Sparta Rotterdam: 3-0.
The team of coach Ron Jans showed
no mercy in a packed Euroborg Stadium and scored three
in the first half hour to beat Sparta 3-0.
With NAC Breda playing tomorrow
Groningen are top of the table again for at least 24
hours.
The Rotterdammers won their first
league game last week by beating FC Utrecht (1-0), but
FC Groningen are of a different caliber than Utrecht
and they have their ranking to show for it.
Sparta were unable to deal with
Groningen's mobile forward line with Petter Andersson,
Marcus Berg and Berry Powel and also didn't have an
answer to the very offensive midfielder Goran Lovre.
Twice could Lovre reach the byline
and twice a goal was the result.
Berg's goal for 3-0 just underlined
the quality difference a little more.
So coach Jans could be happy about
his teams performance that showed they weren't hung
over from last week's defeat
at Ajax.
Because of a busy schedule this
week Groningen took it easy after their third goal but
even then they had a handful of chances to increase
the score.
For Sparta there seems to be little
hope to get out of the relegation zone any time soon
and their decent performance of last week seems to be
an incident.
