FC Twente treat Heerenveen to a hammering
Sunday 23 November 2008
FC Twente had the night of their
lives on Saturday against an incredibly poor Heerenveen.
After 45 minutes the score was
4-0 and in the end Steve McClaren's men finished their
march at 6-0.
Blaise N'Kufo was the main man
with three goals, Kenneth Perez scored two and Marko
Arnautovic completed the half dozen.
FC Twente in fact were lenient
towards the Friesians, because from kickoff the hosts
were all over Heerenveen with Theo Janssen being the
first to test their netminder Kenny Steppe with a long
shot.
Steppe was without chance a few
minutes later but Arnautovic managed to miss in front
of an open goal.
Just a minute later N'Kufo showed
how to deal with chances: 1-0.
However on the half hour it was
the same Swiss international who managed to put the
ball over and unguarded goal himself only to make up
for it a minute later by laying the ball on for Kenneth
Perez.
The Dane didn't fail: 2-0.
Heerenveen gave a good impersonation
of the Comedy Capers, stacking one blunder on the other
and not managing to get anywhere near Twente's goal
once in the first half.
The home team had no trouble creating
chances and increased the score to 4-0 before the half-time
whistle.
N'Kufo neatly finished a combination
with Wout Brama and just before the end of the first
half Perez painted a free kick behind Steppe.
After the break Twente kept stepping
on the gas and added a fifth almost instantly.
Brama crossed, N'Kufo laid it on
for Arnautovic who didn't miss this time.
After that goal Twente's goal hunger
seemed satisfied but Heerenveen were still suffering
at each forward move of the Tukkers.
N'Kufo added to Heerenveen's pain
by scoring a third to make it six.
And as if six goals wasn't enough
Mika Vayrynen got his second yellow card just minutes
from the end so that Heerenveen finished their dismal
performance with ten men.
Heerenveen coach Trond Sollied
didn't have much to say after the game: "And perhaps
it is best that way. I haven't seen many of these. This
was a total blackout of my team. There seemed to be
no self-confidence at all. We have a lot to work on."
Steve McClaren had enjoyed his
team's performance.
"This was a day you don't
get too many of in a season or perhaps even in a whole
career. Everything worked. We've been creating chances
for weeks now, but failed to finish them. Yet we knew
it would click at some point and fortunately that was
tonight. It's just an added bonus that it happens against
a strong side like Heerenveen."
