"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

De Guzman shows Feyenoord the way

Monday 24 August 2009

The strong hand with which coach Mario Been leads Feyenoord have so far brought the club nothing but good things.

After the clear victory over Roda JC (4-0) the team are top of the league and that's a position have had to wait for a very long time.

Been is not sensitive to big names when he puts his team together.

After the away game to Heracles Roy Makaay, Kevin Hofland and Tim de Cler were on the bench in their own stadium as well.

Denny Landzaat was even sentenced to a place in the stands.

From there the former Dutch international had a great few of the mobility of his team mates.

The Roda defense, unbeaten until Sunday, were taken around the bend and the game was decided at half-time: 3-0.

The opening move came from a familiar face for Roda JC: Sekou Cissé.

He used his strongest weapons, speed and and physical strength and defender Davy de Fauw should have known better.

Goal keeper Bram Castro was rounded as well and it was pure skill.

After that it was the Jonathan de Guzman-show.

The former Canadian played his 100th game for Feyenoord, but finally fit after a long period of injury he is hoping to find a new employer before the end of the month.

Given the fact that his contract expired at the end of this season it seems only logical that Feyenoord are willing to cooperate in a transfer as some extra financial room would be welcome in Rotterdam.

Potential buyers will be more interested after yesterday's performance.

For the second goal De Guzman painted the ball on the head of Jon-Dahl Tomasson and a few minutes later he sent a perfect shot from 20 meters out into the top left corner for Feyenoord's third.

He would repeat the feat in the 87th minute to make it 4-0.

So Feyenoord polished their goal difference in the steaming Hot Kuip, now having scored 7 without conceding in 4 games.

Up front Feyenoord look a new team with a lot of movement from the forwards and defensively the young side is beginning to take shape.

Even though senior goal keeper Rob van Dijk (40) had to act on the few times Roda were able to move forward.

After the crowd warned Feyenoord to wake up the home team set their sights on the opposing goal again which resulted in a number of decent chances before De Guzman decided the score.

With the top game against FC Twente coming up next week it should be nice to be a Feyenoord supporter these days.
