Feyenoord part with Gertjan Verbeek
Wednesday 14 January 2009
Gertjan Verbeek is no longer the
coach of Feyenoord, such is confirmed by several sources
within the club and a player of the first team.
It is unclear whether Verbeek got
fired or quit.
It was Verbeek's first season for
the sinking Rotterdammers and the results in the first
half of the season were terrible: 19 points from 17
games and 12th spot in the league.
But the club's management and the
fans always supported the coach.
That was not the case with a large
portion of the (older) players.
They were especially critical of
his communicative skills.
Verbeek was Feyenoord's fifth coach
since they won the UEFA Cup in 2001.
It is unclear who will be on the
bench when Feyenoord travel to Heerenveen on Friday,
but several names are being mentioned as possible caretaker
for the remaining months of the season.
Among those names are the currently
unemployed Wim van Hanegem and Frank Rijkaard, but also
Mario Been (NEC Nijmegen), Leo Beenhakker and the inevitable
Martin Jol.
