Verbeek and De Cler patch up quarrel
Tuesday 28 October 2008
The air has been cleared between
Feyenoord coach Gertjan Verbeek and defender Tim de
Cler.
The left back reacted angrily when
he was substituted during Sunday's match against Heerenveen,
but he apologized on Monday.
For Verbeek the matter is closed
after he explained to the player why he was substituted.
"Towards the end I wanted
to play one on one at the back and I could hardly take
of Tiendalli who I had just put on. Tim understood that.
He knows that when I put on a left winger it's not so
strange to take off the left back," Verbeek told
Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad.
Although the substitution was mainly
tactical, Verbeek admits it also had to do with De Cler's
performance.
"When he would have been playing
very well, giving one magnificent cross after the other
of course I would not have taken him off. Tim agrees
that he has not been reaching the level he can. He is
disappointed by it. His reaction after the substitution
indicates his dedication. He wanted to make a contribution."
De Cler will not be sanctioned
for his outburst.
Verbeek: "Why should I sanction
him? Because other coaches do? It didn't bother me.
It's not &an issue for me. Never was."
