"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Ahead of Eredivisie round 26: facts & predictions

Friday 6 March 2009

• When AZ Alkmaar do not lose in Nijmegen on Sunday they will equal their record from the 1980/81 season of going unbeaten for 24 consecutive league games. The current series of 23 games consists of 20 wins and 3 draws.

• Willem II Tilburg have lost all of their last six games in the Eredivisie. Another defeat at Sparta Rotterdam tonight would be second longest series of defeats in the club's history. The negative record (1967-1979) now stands at 8 games.

• ADO Den Haag have never beaten Ajax Amsterdam at home. Since the 1972/73 season ADO faced Ajax in Den Haag 8 times. They resulted in six defeats and two draws.

• PSV have a poor record in games against a team from the top 5. From the six games PSV have played so far against AZ, FC Twente, Ajax and SC Heerenveen they only gained three points: 1 against AZ (2-2, 0-1), 1 against SC Heerenveen (2-2, 2-3) and 1 against FC Twente (0-0).
