"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Ahead of Eredivisie round 27: facts & predictions

Friday 13 March 2009

• AZ are hoping to extend their series of games without defeat to 25 at FC Utrecht on Sunday. When they succeed it will mean they break the standing record of 24 from the 1980/81 season.

• Sparta Rotterdam are trying to gain their first victory in Heerenveen on Saturday. So far Sparta have played 13 games in the Abe Lenstra Stadion, which resulted in six draws and seven defeats.

• De Graafschap's schedule tells them they will travel to Amsterdam on Sunday to face Ajax. The club from Doetinchem has a sad balance in Amsterdam, losing 14 of the 16 games they played there and drawing 2. De Graafschap conceded no less than 51 goal in Amsterdam.

• ADO Den Haag are suffering from a rare goal drought this season. So far they have scored 26 goals in 26 games. They record low stands at 29 from the 1973/74 and 1981/82 season. Club topscorer Richard Knopper hasn't scored in 11 games.

• SC Heerenveen have really enjoyed the arrival of Viktor Elm. The Swedish striker, who came from Kalmar FF during the winter break, scored six goals in 9 official games. In all games Elm took part in Heerenveen remained undefeated.

• Willem II have been waiting 11 years for a home victory over FC Twente, Saturday's opponents. Since the last win - 15 November 1997, 3-1 - there were four draws and six defeats.
