"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Ahead of Eredivisie round 28: facts & predictions

Friday 20 March 2009

• Ajax forward Luis Suárez is well on the way to a new personal record. The Uruguayan scored 15 goals this season. His best total so far in the Eredivisie has been 17 goals.

• SC Heerenveen has been the most productive team so far in 2009. The Friesians scored 23 goals in 10 games: 18 at home and 5 on the road. Pointwise only AZ Alkmaar did better this year than SC Heerenveen: 28 to 25 points.

• Games between NAC Breda and Ajax have been very rich on goals in recent years. The last five editions in Breda produced 19 goals. Ajax won 4 of the last 5 encounters.

• Unstable Roda JC have been unbeaten at home against ADO Den Haag - Sunday's opponents - since 1974. During this period the club from the city of Kerkrade won won 14 of the 17 encounters.

• FC Groningen travel to FC Twente on Sunday. The northerners won only 1 of their last 6 visits to Enschede. That was on 7 November 2004, when the score was 1-2. FC Groningen conceded 10 goals in the last 2 editions of the game: 3-1 and 7-1.

• FC Volendam have been unbeaten in their last three encounters. It's the first time since 1997 that they have managed such a series at the highest level in the Netherlands. Back then FC Twente (0-0), Vitesse (1-1) and Roda JC (0-2) were the opponents.

• As good as 2008 was for NEC, as bad has 2009 been so far for the team from Nijmegen. The team of the departing Mario Been have won only 2 of their 10 league games this year. At home against Feyenoord (1-0) and away to FC Utrecht (0-2). The other eight games brought four defeats and four draws.

• Heracles Almelo have a terrible away record to Sparta Rotterdam, Saturday's opponents. The club won only 1 of their last 8 visits. In three of the last five editions Heracles didn't score, conceding 15 themselves.
