"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Feyenoord best from a distance

Thursday 07 January 2009

Last week we saw that Ajax' Luis Suarez is the player who misses most chances.

Today we have a look at the efficiency of the clubs.

Goal attempts
Ajax are the team with most attempts at goal halfway through the season, and ADO Den Haag are the least exciting team.

It's remarkable that PSV, who are having such a poor season so far, are second in the ranking of goal attempts.

So it's only natural that the team from Eindhoven are low in the efficiency ranking: only 14% of their chances are converted into a goal.

FC Groningen are best at dealing with a scoring opportunity: 1 in every 5 is turned into a goal, whereas De Graafschap are least efficient.

Efficiency at attempts at goal:

Roda JC 180 21 11,67%

Long shots
Feyenoord have the best marksmen from a distance. The Rotterdammers scored no less than 8 times from outside the penalty area.

Diego Biseswar took care of four of those.

NAC Breda, De Graafschap and FC Utrecht are least successful from a distance, each team scoring only once from outside the box.

Set pieces
The presence of tall and strong Frank Demouge (the club's topscorer with 13 goals) make that Willem II Tilburg are very dangerous at set pieces, scoring eight goals that way.

But still FC Groningen did even better scoring 10 times from dead ball situations.

The team to get almost nothing from their corners and free kicks are PSV.

Only 1 of their 30 goals came from a standard situation.
