"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Suarez misses the most

Saturday 03 January 2008

The Eredivisie is halfway. Luis Suarez is the king of misses, Blaise N'Kufo was offside 32 times and Danijel Pranjic only does it with his left foot.

We look back with some remarkable numbers.

Misses
Luis Suarez' philosophy seems to be that when you don't shoot you can not score. The Ajax player scored 10 this season, but he needed 52 tries to do so, meaning 42 shots did not reach the target. With that the Uruguayan is the absolute king of misses.

Rather at home
The best advice for their coaches would be: do not play Danko Lazovic (PSV) and Roy Beerens (Heerenveen) in an away game. Both forwards scored six so far and their entire production was achieved in home games. The same in a way goes for FC Twente forward Blaise N'Kufo: eight of his total of nine goals were scored in Twente's own Grolsch Veste.

Valuable
Many Dutch clubs depend on foreign input. Moroccan El Hamdaoui (AZ) and Uruguayan Suarez (Ajax) are the most valuable players. First Dutchman Demouge (13 goals, 0 assists) is just outside the top-5.

Booked in full
On many occasions the referees were under a lot of flack. Just think back to the rants of Foeke Booy, Ron Jans or Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Roelof Luinge, the most experienced referee stayed in the clear despite (or perhaps thanks to?) his leading position in the cards ranking.

Target
Mehmet Akgün and Loïc Loval had a tough time in the first half of the season. Both were fouled 64 times. Ibrahim Afellay is also a popular target: in only 13 games he got fouled 62 times.

Foul!
Willem II forward Frank Demouge was fouled 48 times, but don't get too compassionate about the striker. Sturdy Mister Demouge likes a physical game and fouled more than he got fouled: a forward who makes more fouls than any defender...

Offside!
So often we see the disapproving gestures of N'Kufo and the disbelieve in the eyes of Geert Den Ouden when the flag goes up. Of course they were right on a few occasions, but the figures don't lie.
