"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Swinging NEC demolish Volendam

Sunday 30 November 2008

On a Sunday In-between two UEFA Cup ties it was pleasant for NEC Nijmegen that they got no resistance whatsoever from Volendam: 6-1.

Last Thursday NEC lost 1-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur and on Wednesday they they will face Spartak Moscow in Russia, and therefor an easy league game was transformed into a practice match.

NEC were 3-0 up after 15 minutes and increased their league to 5-0 before half-time.

In the second half both team added one goal as NEC did not feel like stepping on the gas for another 45 minutes.

Volendam did finally get their first away goal, but the fact that it came fifteen minutes from the end being 6-0 down already was slightly embarrassing.

The team of Mario Been stay in touch with the UEFA Cup spots and will have gained some confidence for Wednesday's tough encounter.
