Record defeat for Feyenoord against PSV
Sunday 21 December 2008
By losing 1-0 to PSV in Eindhoven
Feyenoord Rotterdam suffered their eighth league defeat
of this season, the third in a row and the 15th defeat
of 2008.
The latter being a new record for
Feyenoord as they did one 'better' than the disaster
years 1957 and 1989 - what a nice way to mark your 100th
birthday - and with NAC Breda coming to De Kuip on Friday
there is chance to even improve the record.
The game in Eindhoven was dreadful
and it was clear that there were two teams on the pitch
that are going through their worst crises.
For PSV it isn't quite that bad
as they did gain three points in the end and are still
fourth in the league, although 9 points behind leaders
AZ.
But their play did not remind the
spectators of the team that has won four straight league
titles in any way.
For Feyenoord the crisis is taking
on calamitous proportions.
Four wins and eight defeats in
sixteen games, 13th spot, rebellious players, an overcrowded
sickbay and no money to either sack the coach and/or
get new players in.
Still like they did in the game
against AZ last week, Feyenoord showed that they are
able to play well organized and that they do have some
sort of a plan, but that they lack both the quality
and - most of all - the good spirit to win games against
teams from the top half of the table.
As was the case eight days ago
today PSV only needed less than a handful of chances
to gain three points against Feyenoord and the goal
in the end was a long shot - Afellay - from a badly
cleared corner.
There were some decent chances
for Bakkal and Lazovic in the first half and the Serbian
hot head may have had a justified claim to a penalty
early in the second half.
But apart from that PSV were poor.
They lack defenders who can take
care of a decent buildup, they lack ideas in midfield
and they lack a prolific goal scorer.
Danko Lazovic thinks he is just
that, but few in Holland would agree with him.
Six goals in 16 games speak for
themselves.
Feyenoord's forward moves were
also very limited and often ended in one of their midfielders
simply handing the ball over to the PSV defense.
The best chance was for an again
lackluster Roy Makaay.
The former Deportivo and Bayern
Munich forward beat PSV stopper Andreas Isaksson but
his flick was to weak and could be cleared off the line
by Dirk Marcellis.
Feyenoord coach Gertjan Verbeek
put all his available forwards on for the last fifteen
minutes of the game, but to get to an all out offensive
you have to have possession of the ball.
Feyenoord didn't get much of that
in the last quarter of the game and so when an also
poor referee Erik Braamhaar blew his final whistle after
three minutes of stoppage time few were unhappy that
it was all over.
