There's light at the end of the tunnel for Feyenoord

Sunday 02 November 2008

Feyenoord scored 4 goals in 17 minutes at Roda JC to decide a match only they deserved to win and the Rotterdammers now seem to have found the way up again.

After not having won 6 games in a row - the last victory dating back to 17 September - Feyenoord were led by 17-year-old Georgino Wijnaldum who scored one and had an assist on two other goals.

The defense of the team of Gertjan Verbeek didn't give away a single chance, their midfield with Karim EL Ahmadi and Giovanni van Bronckhorst determined the pace of the game and up front Wijnaldum and Diego Biseswar were a constant menace for the Roda JC defenders.

Hopefully for everyone with a red-and-white heart the much needed victory was the turn around for Feyenoord that now step away from the relegation zone.

Feyenoord drew some hope from last week's result at home against Heerenveen.

In that game Feyenoord had a terrible start, but after going 2-0 down the team fought back to equalize in the last minute of the game.

In midweek Feyenoord played a decent game but had no luck at all and saw Sparta Rotterdam snatch the three points just before the final whistle.

However Feyenoord's performance in that game was better than one can tell from the 2-1 result and today Van Bronckhorst and his men continued down that line.

Only now the result was paired to a good result.

In the first half both teams played just as their position in the table would suggest.

Both were cautious going forward and always kept 6 or 7 players behind the ball.

But it was Feyenoord who showed better football and more determination to go out and score a goal, with each time the young Georgino Wijnaldum at the start of every good thing they produced.

However the two good chances they created led to nothing because of Diego Biseswar and El Ahmadi being too selfish in front of goal.

The game thus remained goalless until half-time, but after the break that quickly changed.

In the 53rd minute Wijnaldum headed home at the far post from a great Van Bronckhorst cross
(0-1) and four minutes later Fer scored after a fantastic effort of El Ahmadi down the left flank and a nice flick by Wijnaldum (0-2).

The match then seemed decide although with the shape Feyenoord have been in this season nothing seems certain.

Yet within 15 minutes Feyenoord put an end to all doubt.

First Georgino Wijnaldum covered 60 meters with the ball, drew in four defenders and then played it into the path of Roy Makaay who didn't think twice and finished it with a diagonal drive from the edge of the penalty area (3-0).

Only minutes later Biseswar beat the Roda goal keeper a fourth time after yet another fast counter attack.

Gertjan Verbeek couldn't believe what he saw: after weeks of misfortune and missed opportunities all of a a sudden every shot on target went in.

Feyenoord had a few half chances to make the score even better, but with the real determination gone no goals were added.

It was Feyenoord's first away win since March of this year (AZ, 0-1) and should give the plagued club some hope that better times await them.

For Roda dark times lay ahead as they now sink to 17th spot.
