Roda JC and Fortuna Sittard to merge into
FC Limburg
Wednesday 12 November 2008
Eredivisie club Roda JC and Jupiler
League club Fortuna Sittard seem on the verge of a merger
into a new club: FC Limburg.
Several newspapers in the province
of Limburg have reported that the two clubs will issue
a statement this afternoon about their intentions.
The Dutch FA (KNVB) have been making
for a merger between two or more clubs from Limburg
for a while now as the close proximity of too many professional
clubs in the south of the province is not doing any
of the clubs any good.
"We would still prefer to
continue as Roda JC, but when we get an invitation from
the province to talk about a merger it would be very
arrogant to turn it down in advance," Roda-director
Huub Narinx said only last week.
Fortuna director Hans Erkens has
stated previously that he is looking at all possibilities
to save his club that has had financial problems for
years now.
The KNVB have said that the club
should sort out their problems before 17 November if
they want to keep their professional license.
"Mere survival is our only
goal at the moment. We have to have things sorted before
17 November otherwise this is where it ends for Fortuna,"
Erkens said.
The plans to merge two or more
clubs from Limburg (Roda JC, Fortuna Sittard, MVV Maastricht
and VVV Venlo) go back more than ten years.
Fans have always fiercely objected
the plans, but the clubs' boards no longer seem against
it.
