AZ increase gap to 9 points
Sunday 01 February 2009
The first league title since 1984
s getting mighty close for AZ Alkmaar, after they beat
Sparta 0-2 today and increased the gap with Ajax Amsterdam
to 9 points and 14 games left to play.
Moussa Dembele and Mounir el Hamdaoui
scored in the second half.
AZ have proved several times in
recent weeks that they don't have to play well to win
and in Rotterdam the team of coach Louis van Gaal were
again far from impressive.
But again they did not drop any
points.
The home team played bravely and
had little trouble withstanding AZ's forward moves while
creating three decent chances in the first half.
AZ's only chance was for Mounir
El Hamdaoui fifteen minutes into the game.
After the break the league leaders
went looking for a goal in a much more determined way
and found one in the 65th minute.
Martens launched Dembele and the
Belgian forward - returned after three months of injury
trouble - finished accurately.
Shortly after the opener El Hamdaoui
decided the game with his 16th game of the season.
Now the lead of AZ has increased
to nine points but it must be noted that Van Gaal's
boys have the toughest part of their
schedule still ahead of them as the last 14 matches
include away games to Twente FC, Ajax, NAC Breda, Utrecht
FC, NEC and PSV...
Sparta - AZ 0-2

0-2 85' M. El Hamdaoui
