Poorly finishing Groningen drop points
at Sparta
Sunday 18 January 2009
FC Groningen dropped two unnecessary
points in Rotterdam against Sparta this afternoon.
Groningen played poorly and finished
poorly.
Center forward Markus Berg should
have scored twice and in the hectic dying minutes of
the game his team were fortunate to not lose the game
all together.
Despite the fact that Groningen
played a very poor first half they could have decided
the game before the break.
Helped by the far from solid Sparta
defense they had a number of good chances.
The home team worked hard but couldn't
enforce anything up front.
In the second half Groningen kept
missing chances and thus made it hard on themselves,
although at first all problems seemed solved when Koen
van de Laak put them ahead in the 48th minute.
But fifteen minutes later they
got the bill for their sloppy finishing when Joey Godee
battled himself through the Groningen defense and scored:
1-1.
Both Berg and Lovre failed to put
Groningen ahead again and with the home team pressing
for the winning goal they were lucky to get away with
a point.
Sparta Rotterdam - FC Groningen 1-1
0-1 48' K. van de Laak
1-1 60' J. Godee
