Willem II beat 10 of Sparta Rotterdam
Saturday 27 December 2008
After four successive defeats Willem
II Tilburg finally gained a victory tonight when they
beat 10 men of Sparta Rotterdam: 3-2.
Willem II's last victory dated
back to 23 November, when they beat FC Groningen 3-0.
Since there were four defeats against
Heracles Almelo, SC Heerenveen, NEC and FC Twente.
The victory over Sparta therefore
was desperately needed to end the first half of the
season with a positive feeling.
Sparta will be reasonably satisfied
with 18 points gained, but after they beat Heerenveen
4-1 last week they had perhaps hoped for more in Tilburg.
The hosts got a good start when
they opened the score after only three minutes.
Sparta were unfortunate shortly
after when defender Ruud Knol hit the post, and instead
of equalizing the Rotterdammer had to concede a second
in the 22nd when Frank Demouge headed home a Said Boutahar
free kick.
Sparta pulled one back just before
half-time when Knol converted a spot kick, but their
happiness was short-lived as Edouard Duplan saw his
second yellow card only minutes later.
Despite being one man down Sparta
managed to equalize after the break by a goal from Joey
Godee, and that score was a just illustration of the
face of the game.
But the poor referee Michel Winter
thought differently when he gave Willem II a penalty
for a suspected handball of a Sparta defender.
Demouge missed from the spot, but
from the corner that followed Arjan Swinkels did give
Willem II the lead again and in the end that turned
out to be enough for three points.
