"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Van Marwijk: "In no mood to get negative"

9 June 2012

It was a disappointing result and despite the many chances a lackluster performance. Holland were by far the better team against Denmark, but the team of manager Morten Olsen were the only ones to score a goal and that's what it is all about. With games against Portugal and Germany coming up the task of getting out of the group is not an easy one, but manager Bert van Marwijk is still full of confidence.

"Of course I would have liked to see us win today, but I'm in no mood to get negative," he said straight after the game on Dutch TV. "This team is capable of so much. Now we have to show that against Germany. We showed we can play football en that we can create chances, but you have to put them in."

Van Marwijk didn't want to blame his players with anything: "Before we conceded the goal the Danes hadn't even been near our goal. We tried everything to win, in every possible way. We played very offensive and created many chances, but we didn't score."

The missed chances will reignite the discussion about the position of the center forward. The Schalke 04 player came on in the 71st minute, but also squandered two good chances. Van Marwijk showed no doubt about Van Persie at all: "Robin was good on the ball, involved himself and had some good chances. He just didn't put him in. But he wasn't the only one. On top of that we were denied a penalty towards the end. It was a clear handball by Lars Jacobsen.”
