Euro 2012 Poland & Ukraine - Friendlies
Cruijff: "Not enough depth in your game is asking
If it were up to Johan Cruijff
Oranje will not play Rafael van der Vaart and Robin
van Persie on the wing at Euro 2012. The Dutch legend
thinks there is too little depth in the Dutch game when
Holland play like that, and that allows teams like Bulgaria
to survive relatively easily.
"First their game needs more
depth," Cruijff says in his opinion piece in De
Telegraaf. "Over the wings and from midfield."
"Because Van der Vaart and
Van Persie didn't play towards the goal line there were
hardly any crosses, and as a consequence there weren't
any second balls and us such hardly any shots on goal,"
Cruijff adds. "And then even a modest team like
Bulgaria doesn't get into trouble."
Cruijff thinks the solution is
fairly straight forward: "B creating more space
on the outside there will be more space for the midfielders
because the defenders have to drop back further and
have more trouble covering the backs of others. Of course
midfielders have to anticipate that."
"Holland have to more practice
games to work on that. Just like Chelsea played in the
Champions League final against Bayern and Bulgaria did
on Saturday the Portuguese will organize themselves
in much the same way. When there's not enough depth
in your game you're asking for trouble."
