Van Marwijk: "We remained disciplined"
30 May 2012
Oranje lost 2-1 to Bulgaria on
Saturday because, thought manager Bert van Marwijk,
the players lost their focus in the last half hour of
the game. The bondscoach was much happier about that
aspect in Wednesday's game against Slovakia (2-0).
"On Saturday we lost our focus
after an hour and tried to force things. That's how
we put ourselves out of the game. Now we remained disciplined,
and in the end we were able to break our opponents,"
Van Marwijk said after the match. "Had we played
another fifteen minutes we could have scored another
two."
So Van Marwijk was happy with the
result: "This was a difficult game against a tough
opponent. They were well organized. It's a matter of
being very patient against such opponents."
Van Marwijk started with Afellay
and Robben out wide, in stead of Van Persie and Van
der Vaart. Especially Afellay was very lively, whereas
Robben was constantly forced to go around the outside
and cross with his lesser right foot. "With players
out wide it's a matter of creating that one on one and
rounding the defender. We didn't do that enough today.
A victory with some perspective? When our team is well
organized, when the defense is stable we have so much
creativity in midfield and up front that we can decide
games our way. That is our strength and that is what
we should start from."
