Van Marwijk to Ukraine with second choice
Monday 9 August 2010
On Wednesday Holland play a friendly
against the Ukraine. It's their first game after the
lost World Cup final on 11 July, but of the 23 players
present in South Africa only one (reserve goal keeper
Michel Vorm) will join Van Marwijk and his staff on
this trip to Donetsk.
"Because of our long stay
in South Africa this game comes too early for most players.
Many of them are still on holiday or they have only
recently started with their clubs. I don't want to put
an extra and unnecessary burden on them," Van Marwijk
explained. "So now this game is a good chance to
see some of the youngsters who are emerging from close
by."
Wednesday's game could mean the
international debut for as many as seven players. Roy
Beerens, Jeffrey Bruma, Siem de Jong, Erik Pieters,
Leroy Fer and Ricky van Wolfswinkel were never called
up for the national team before.
The squad:
Michel Vorm (FC Utrecht), Piet Velthuizen (Vitesse),
Vurnon Anita (Ajax), Glenn Loovens (Celtic), Jeffrey
Bruma (Chelsea), Erik Pieters (PSV), Ron Vlaar (Feyenoord),
Dirk Marcellis (AZ), Leroy Fer (Feyenoord), Wout Brama
(FC Twente), Urby Emanuelson (Ajax), Hedwiges Maduro
(Valencia), Theo Janssen (FC Twente), Siem de Jong (Ajax),
Roy Beerens (sc Heerenveen), Jeremain Lens (PSV), Ricky
van Wolfswinkel (FC Utrecht).
