"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Kuyt and Boulahrouz out with injury

7 September 2010

Dirk Kuyt and Khalid Boulahrouz are not available for tonight's Euro 2012 qualification game against Finland in Rotterdam. Both players got injured during the last training session. Especially Kuyt's injury looks serious.

Kuyt fell on his shoulder awkwardly during training yesterday and sprained the ball-and-socket joint between his collarbone and his upper arm. Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk said. There's a possibility he also tore some ligaments in his shoulder. Kuyt flew back to Liverpool yesterday and will probably be out for several weeks.

The injury of Khalid Boulahrouz seems less serious, although he will miss the game against Finland because of it. The defender sustained a groin injury during training. "He first felt it when the training session had already finished," said Van Marwijk.

The injury of Dirk Kuyt means that Holland are without the entire forward line of the team that played the World Cup as Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie are injured as well. "It's a major setback. But we've known for a while now that Robin and Arjen wouldn't play. A number of players have quietly secured themselves a place with the team, like Elia, Jeremain Lens and even Ruud van Nistelrooy. That is good. But fact of the matter is that our entire World Cup-offense is missing."

John Heitinga will most likely return to the starting lineup against Finland, after a one game suspension. It's unsure who will replace Dirk Kuyt. Jeremain Lens is the only true right-winger in the team, but Ibrahim Afellay and Rafael van der Vaart can play there as well.

Presumable lineup: Stekelenburg, Pieters, Mathijsen, Heitinga, Van der Wiel, Van Bommel, De Jong; Afellay, Sneijder, Elia, Huntelaar
