Van der Vaart unhappy with role on the side
7 September 2010
At the start of this new qualification
campaign Rafael van der Vaart hoped he would be a regular
in the starting line up of the team of Bert van Marwijk.
But on Friday against San Marino he was on the bench.
"It's always hard to swallow when you're not in
the starting lineup for Holland. Also in a game against
San Marino," says the Spurs-player.
Van der Vaart is unhappy with his
role on the side: "Even against San Marino I feel
as I should start. Especially against such a weak opponent,
but in other games as well. But I will not hang down
my head. You learn how to deal with such situations.
There's no use in being upset about it. Besides the
other guys can not help it that I am not in the team."
Before a crowd of 3,000 against
a team of eager amateurs Bert van Marwijk still stuck
to two holding midfielders. Van der Vaart feels he can
play in that holding role as well.
"I have said more often that
I can play where Nigel de Jong and Van Bommel play.
The coach prefers those two, who are mainly defensive.
That's his choice. Perhaps it will happen that I play
there. An athlete always wants to play. Sports is about
having fun. The people want to be entertained. Nowadays
it's all so businesslike. I have always had a playful
side to my game, from the moment I started at Ajax,
and I do not plan on losing that. As long as it's functional
it should be okay."
