Van Marwijk counters Cruyff criticism
3 September 2010
Dutch Bondscoach Bert van
Marwijk respects the opinion of Johan Cruyff, but at
the same time disagrees with him. The Dutch legend on
Monday wrote in his weekly column that his eyes hurt
from watching Holland play, that the team doesn't master
position play and that it's all wrong tactically. Cruyff
also wondered whether or not Van Marwijk will continue
along these lines in the Euro 2012 qualification campaign.
"Spain is used as an example,
but they too play with two holding midfielders, no matter
who they play," Van Marwijk countered Cruyff.
"Besides that it often happens
that in fact Nigel de Jong is the only holding midfielder
and that Mark van Bommel plays much higher up the pitch.
But many people don't see that, or they don't want to
see that."
"People can have a different
opinion and see football differently, but it's me who's
been appointed by the KNVB to execute it and I am doing
so in my own way," said an aggravated Van Marwijk.
