"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Van Marwijk: "We played very well"

8 October 2010

The Netherlands beat Moldavia 0-1 on Friday night. Yet other than the result might indicate Holland manager Bert van Marwijk was happy with the way his team had performed.

"We played well and were in control for most of the game," he said afterwards. "But in the first half we should have scored three or four goals and decided matters earlier."

"In the second half we again missed too many chances. Because of that it was a bit tricky towards the end. That was unnecessary. But most important thing here was to win and we did that. We didn't give away much."

Van Marwijk also said that Moldavia played a little different than he had expected. "They started very defensive. They changed that a little bit in the second half. But Frank de Boer (assistant to Van Marwijk) still noted nine good chances. We should converted more of those."

Captain Mark van Bommel was content the game of his team. "We played very well, but should have this game matters earlier. When you score a second it's over. Now we had to pay attention all the way."

Van Bommel who ended the game with some minor knee problems, was happy with the way Holland did things tactically: "We were always able to find either Wesley Sneijder or Rafael van der Vaart in-between the lines. That was good."

On Tuesday Holland take on Sweden in the Amsterdam Arena.
