Sweden no match for Oranje
12 October 2010
Before the match some Swedish players
were full of confidence and Ola Toivonen even dared
to state that Sweden were favorites to win it. But words
are but words and worth very little out there on the
pitch. Holland were all over the Swedes from the start
and took the lead after only four minutes when Klaas-Jan
Huntelaar finished a Van der Vaart assist.
After the explosive start to the
game Oranje then shifted down a gear, but still doubled
the score when Ibrahim Afellay put his first international
goal in the books on the half hour.
Sweden had one chance when Toivonen
saw his arched shot go just wide.
Shortly after Holland had to make
their first substitution. Dirk Kuyt was replaced by
had to come off after he landed awkwardlyon his ankle.
Jeremain Lens replaced the Liverpool striker.
In the second half Holland seemed
to go goal crazy when Huntelaar and Afellay both scored
their second within 15 minutes and Lens saw a fifth
Dutch goal denied for offside.
Granqvist's goal then cooled the
Dutch Frenzy.
The Dutch victory is an enormous
step for Van Marwijk's side on the way to Poland and
Ukraine. Holland remain unbeaten and deal a serious
blow to Sweden, who were thought to be their main rival
in Group E.
