"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

FC Twente need two hours to get past De Graafschap

Wednesday 04 March 2009

FC Twente have reached the semifinals of the KNVB Cup.

The number 2 in the Eredivisie beat De Graafschap 1-0 on Wednesday with the decisive goal being scored in the last minute of stoppage time.

Marko Arnautovic was the match winner.

The Austrian caught goal keeper Nicolas Cinalli with a magnificent lob.

The late goal was a good illustration of the resistance De Graafschap offered, and had FC Twente go all the way for the second time in 7 days.

Last week their UEFA Cup tie against Marseilles also went into extra time, after which the Tukkers lost on penalties.

Despite being the far better team from kickoff FC Twente didn't succeed to cause the visitors much trouble.

A short offensive in the first half brought them some minor chances, but nothing too serious.

The second half had a similar scenario: Twente being the better side without creating many chances.

Wisgerhof hit the bar with his knee from a Perez corner and the Dane himself hit the post a little later.

Towards the end Twente of course tried to prevent another additional 30 minutes with Arnautovic going close.

But De Graafschap held on and in stoppage time even left their trenches at times.

Just when the visitors thought they'd get their best chance on penalties Arnautovic decided otherwise.
