"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Rommedahl helps NEC past Sparta

Thursday 22 January 2009

Busy weeks lie head of NEC Nijmegen, because after they knocked Sparta Rotterdam out of the Dutch Cup tournament they are still active on three fronts.

Mario Been's team are still active in Europe, in the league they have every chance of qualifying for next year's UEFA Cup and now they have also reached the quarterfinals of the Dutch Cup.

In an attractive match Dennis Rommedahl - newly arrived from Ajax - was the main man for NEC, who found a worthy opponent in Sparta.

The Rotterdammers had come to Nijmegen believing an upset was possible and it was indeed Foeke Booy's team who opened the score.

NEC seemed taken aback for a while but they recovered quickly.

Rommedahl proved a menace on the right flank, first creating a big chance for himself and then laying on one for Jhonny van Beukering, but both efforts were cleared off the line.

Ten minutes from half-time NEC did equalize when Rommedahl flicked a ball to Schöne who beat the Sparta keep from close range.

Shortly after the break Van Beukering made it 2-1 and with that Sparta's resistance was broken early.

NEC - Sparta 2-1
0-1 02' Y. Rose
1-1 36' L. Schöne
2-1 55' J. van Beukering
