Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.

FC Volendam again cause major Cup upset

Thursday 05 March 2009

They have been bottom of the table all season and seem sure to get relegated at the end of the season, but their poor ranking in the Eredivisie has not kept Volendam from causing upsets in the KNVB Cup.

They knocked out Ajax earlier on and on Thursday they surprised everyone with a rare away win: 2-3 at Roda JC Kerkrade.

But the victory was fully justified with Roda JC again proving that the fired coach Raymond Atteveld was not the sole reason for the club's miserable season so far.

New coach Harm van Veldhoven doesn't seem able either to get them to play football: hapless and piling one mistake on the other Roda stumbled over the soaky pitch and as Volendam were simply not able to create much up front most of the game took place in midfield.

The visitors did manage to score once though with Tim Bakens heading home from a corner.

After the break Roda picked up the pace a bit but it didn't immediately lead to better football and more chances but center forward Yulu-Matondo did put Roda level.

He then missed two absolute sitters and saw how it took a defender (Davy de Fauw) to give Roda the lead: 2-1.

The Limburgers then had a number of decent chances to decide matters but failed miserably on each occasion.

It's an old unwritten football law that missing chances invites your opponents to score and Volendam did just that.

Again from a corner supersub Melvin Platje was allowed to tap in the equalizer from close range:
2-2.

In an exciting last part of the game Roda again had a number of great chances and sometimes not scoring seemed the hardest option, but Roda managed and to their agony saw how Platje scored a second in stoppage time: 2-3.
