Van Marwijk sticks to Madrid quartet

4 August 2009

Despite their uncertain situation at Real Madrid Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart shall not have to fear for their position in Oranje.

Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk will select the four on Friday for the upcoming friendly against England.

Huntelaar and Van der Vaart are on a derelict siding at Real and Sneijder and Robben aren't undisputed either.

"But to leave them out straight away would go to far," Van Marwijk told Dutch weekly Sportweek.

"Especially now they need confidence. I have always said it will not be easy to make the team, but once you have achieved that you have some credit."

"There isn't much they can do about their situation. I have a good feeling about this squad. We have had a stainless qualification campaign, we are on the right track. I will not let them down," said Holland's coach.

Van Marwijk did emphasize that the players should find a solution for their precarious situation before the end of August.

"Of course I would have liked to see Huntelaar sign a contract with VfB Stuttgart. The Bundesliga is a decent league and Stuttgart isn't just any club. They are in the qualification round of the Champions League and with the departed Mario Gomez they hosted the center forward of the German national team. We will have to see where Huntelaar and Van der Vaart end up. In a pre-World Cup season it is key that they play games at a high level."

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most

with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
