Holland-Italy: comments

Saturday 14 November 2009

No one was very pleased with Holland and Italy's hapless 0-0 draw in Pescara, least of all Robin van Persie.

The Dutch striker got kicked out of the match after 10 minutes after a wild tackle by Giorgio Chiellini.

Van Persie is expected to be out for six weeks.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk most of all praised his defense: "We stood our ground very well defensively. Against this opponent that counts. Normally we have the qualities to make a difference up front in a game like this. But today we couldn't and that's a petty. We had some trouble in the opening minutes, but we were able to sort things out quickly. All in all it was a poor game."

Rafael van der Vaart was honest after Saturday's game: "It was boring. Both teams were well organized and gave away few chances. That's when get games like these. It's not very amusing, but we'll see games like these during the World Cup as well."

Captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst was most unhappy about Holland's offensive efforts: "We played the long ball too often because there was too little movement in the build up. Defensively we were okay. We didn't play well, and to then not lose against Italy is an achievement as well."

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
