Van Persie brace gives Holland smooth
win over Sweden
Wednesday 19 November 2008
The Dutch national football team
beat Sweden tonight with a leading role for Robin van
Persie with two goals.
Källström pulled one
back for Sweden after a poor reaction from goal keeper
Michel Vorm and Dirk Kuyt determined the end result
with a goal in the 90th minute: 3-1.
Holland were the far better team
tonight against the defensive Swedes and the 1-0 score
at half-time was a bleak illustration of the real quality
difference.
Holland created a number of good
chances whereas Holland's keeper Henk Timmer didn't
have to act one single time.
Van Persie scored Holland's first
goal.
The Arsenal striker headed home
a Wesley Sneijder cross from close range and saw a shot
stopped by PSV's keeper Isaksson.
A goal by Mark van Bommel was disallowed
for offside.
Van Persie added a second shortly
after the break.
Sneijder sent Rafael van der Vaart
towards the goal line and after a magnificent turn the
Madrid player pulled the ball back for the oncoming
Van Persie.
Sweden then pulled one back immediately
by Kim Källström but Holland remained the
strongest team.
The Dutch got their reward in added
time.
Tim de Cler crossed from the left
and Kuyt headed it past Isaksson.
Coach Bert van Marwijk called it
a useful friendly against a difficult opponent: "It's
hard to play against this team. They play close to their
own penalty area and that makes the spaces very small.
But we remained patient and kept looking for an opening
in very disciplined fashion. We created a lot of chances
and gave away only one. It's a pity that that had to
be a goal."
1-0 32' R. van Persie
2-0 48' R. van Persie
2-1 49' K. Källström
3-1 90' D. Kuyt
