De Jong and Marcellis injured, Mendes
da Silva returns
Monday 17 November 2008
David Mendes da Silva has been
added to the squad of the Dutch national team for Wednesday's
friendly against Sweden.
The AZ defender received an invitation
because Dirk Marcellis (PSV) and Nigel de Jong (HSV)
are both out with injuries.
Mendes da Silva has been capped
once before.
On 7 February 2007 he came on as
a substitute in a friendly against Russia (4-1).
Wednesday's game could well see
the debut of FC Utrecht goal keeper Michel Vorm.
The young stopper would be number
two to Henk Timmer, but the Feyenoord keeper dislocated
his finger in Sunday's game against FC Twente and did
not train with the rest of the squad on Monday.
The Dutch squad now contains 18
players:
Goal keepers: Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Michel Vorm (FC
Utrecht)
Defenders: Khalid Boulahrouz (VfB
Stuttgart), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Tim
de Cler (Feyenoord), John Heitinga (Atlético
Madrid), David Mendes da Silva (AZ), Joris Mathijsen
(HSV), André Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers)
Midfielders: Ibrahim Afellay (PSV),
Mark van Bommel (Bayern München), Orlando Engelaar
(Schalke'04), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid), Rafael
van der Vaart (Real Madrid), Demy de Zeeuw (AZ)
Forwards: Ryan Babel (Liverpool),
Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
