"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Boulahrouz, De Jong and Heitinga return to Dutch squad

Friday 14 November 2008

Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk has named 19 players for a friendly Holland play against Sweden next Wednesday in Amsterdam.

Back on the list are Nigel de Jong, Khalid Boulahrouz and John Heitinga, who had missed the last games due to injuries.

Dirk Marcellis and Michel Vorm, who were first selected last month are also part of the squad again.

Arjen Robben, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and goal keeper Maarten Stekelenburg are absent due to injuries.

For the last two World Cup qualifiers Stekelenburg was replaced by the retired Edwin van der Sar, but this time it's Henk Timmer (Feyenoord) and Michel Vorm (Utrecht) battling for the place in goal.

It's remarkable that with Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel and Robin van Persie the team only contains three forwards.

The squad:
Goal keepers: Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Michel Vorm (FC Utrecht)

Defenders: Khalid Boulahrouz (VfB Stuttgart), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Tim de Cler (Feyenoord), John Heitinga (Atlético Madrid), Dirk Marcellis (PSV), Joris Mathijsen (HSV), André Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers)

Midfielders: Ibrahim Afellay (PSV), Mark van Bommel (Bayern München), Orlando Engelaar (Schalke'04), Nigel de Jong (HSV), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid), Rafael van der Vaart (Real Madrid), Demy de Zeeuw (AZ)

Forwards: Ryan Babel (Liverpool), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
